The tradition of bringing a Christmas tree into our homes each year is a symbol of connection, hope, and celebration. This timeless custom brightens winter’s darkest days and reminds us of nature’s resilience. But where did it all begin, and how does this story connect to the work of Christmas tree growers today?
Let’s take a closer look at the history of the Christmas tree and how GGN label trees contribute to this cherished tradition.
The origins of the Christmas tree
The practice of using evergreens during winter has ancient roots. Pagan communities in Northern Europe revered these trees as symbols of life and renewal during the harsh winter months. Their ability to stay green year-round represented hope and resilience, a promise that spring would eventually return. Evergreens were not only decorations but also symbols of protection and perseverance.
In the 16th century, what we recognize today as the Christmas tree began to take shape. In Germany, stories suggest that Martin Luther introduced the practice of decorating trees with candles, inspired by the beauty of a starlit winter night.
Over time, the tradition spread across Europe, with milestones such as Queen Charlotte’s Christmas tree in England in 1800 and the widespread popularity it gained under Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. By the 19th century, the Christmas tree had become a global tradition.
The GGN label’s connection to Christmas trees
The GGN label’s journey is deeply tied to Christmas tree production, reflecting our shared focus on responsible practices. Starting in 2019, we have had a variety of Christmas trees displaying the GGN label. Growers of GGN labeled Christmas trees adhere to high standards, ensuring that each tree is cultivated with care.
Through partnerships with retailers like Lidl, Aldi, and Toom, GGN label Christmas trees have become increasingly more available and are now a meaningful part of holiday celebrations for many families.
In 2024, we’re excited to see GGN label trees offered at hagebau, an association of around 350 medium-sized wholesalers and retailers, with more than 1,500 DIY store locations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, France, Belgium and Spain.
Continuing our tradition of supporting producers, like Christmas trees from Trippe Vertriebs GmbH in Schmallenberg, Germany, we are delighted to see an expansion in the number of stores providing consumers with responsible choices
